Software-defined networking: Centralized, flexible and scalable to simplify network deployment

Over the years, QNAP has made P2V (physical to virtual) on NAS possible, from hosting virtual machines in Virtualization Station to running containerized applications in Container Station. In QTS 4.3.5, QNAP sets yet another milestone by taking virtualized networks to a new level. The new software-defined network architecture allows users to leverage limited physical network resources for unlimited virtual applications, centrally manage the entire network structure with a brilliantly-visualized network topology map, and flexibly allocate network resources with only a few clicks. This software-defined network architecture enables you to deploy a multitude of virtual applications on QNAP NAS more efficiently than you can imagine!

Clear topology for easy management of both virtual and physical networks

All connections are now visualized for you to easily check the network topology, devices on the network (including VMs and containerized apps) and the virtual switches that the devices are connected to, physical ports being used, and connection statuses.

Easily identify physical ports

To find an interface, click "Locate" and the physical location will be indicated on the device diagram and the LED on the device will also blink.

Multiple customizable DDNS settings

Even more DDNS service providers are supported to provide you with greater choice and convenience. You can now customize DDNS settings to enable IP address updating of virtually every DDNS service.

Enhanced DHCP and radvd support for simple network management

The DHCPv4 service now supports IP address reservations, allowing devices to be assigned with a static IP address without changing settings on the client side. radvd (Router Advertisement Daemon) has also been improved for every network port to support full radvd implementations.

Ensure Internet availability with automatic system default gateway setting

In QTS 4.3.5 you have the option of letting the system periodically detect the network connection status and automatically setting the default gateway. When changes occur in network connection, the NCSI (Network Connectivity Status Indicator) service will respond to the changes automatically to ensure uninterrupted internet connection.

Static routes configuration for advanced IT management

Static routes provide IT administrators with the flexibility to configure how packets will be distributed and from which routing path on the network. This provides them with greater control, especially when there are multiple IP subnets located on the network.

Join the 10GbE revolution!

QNAP provides a wide range of 10GbE-ready NAS, and now offers a range of cost-effective 10GbE devices for you to fully adopt high-speed networking. QNAP's QXG-10G1T PCIe adapter allows you to add 10GbE connectivity to a QNAP NAS or PC, and the new 10GbE QSW unmanaged switch series allows you to instantly upgrade to a 10GbE high-speed network environment. Alongside these hardware enhancements, with the improved Network & Virtual Switch that enables software-defined network configuration, even VMs and containerized applications can benefit from the cutting-edge performance provided by all your 10GbE devices!

Cut wires, not performance

QNAP's QWA-AC2600 wireless adapter card adds high-performance wireless connectivity to QNAP NAS. Whether accessing your NAS wirelessly, or turning your NAS into a wireless base station, you can free your devices from network cables without sacrificing performance. (The QWA-AC2600 can also be installed in Linux/Ubuntu PCs).

Introducing QBelt - QNAP's new VPN protocol

By using a VPN connection you can connect to private networks via the Internet, or circumvent network/geographical limitations. QBelt can also encrypt traffic when you access sensitive data, decreasing the chance of being detected as a VPN connection.

Software-defined SSD awareness: Performance driven to cater your needs

With SSD prices continuing to fall, they are becoming an increasingly cost-effective solution for boosting NAS performance. But to make the most of their amazing potential, you not only need the right SSDs - but also the right NAS! QTS 4.3.5 transforms QNAP NAS into SSD-aware storage with cutting-edge “software-defined SSD extra over-provisioning” technology alongside advanced SSD caching. Given the favorable flexibility to adjust the SSD over-provisioning, you can enjoy better SSD performance and endurance - allowing you to potentially attain enterprise-grade SSD performance levels from affordable consumer SSDs.

Improve write performance with SSD extra over-provisioning

While almost all SSDs have shown consistent write performance degradation, QNAP’s software-defined SSD extra over-provisioning helps sustain an optimized SSD performance. It supports major SSD RAID configurations to improve random write speeds, with a constant performance boost of more than 100% for IOPS-demanding applications.

Extend SSD lifespan with higher endurance

Write amplification is an undesirable effect of SSDs, bringing challenges to flash memory performance and endurance. QNAP’s SSD extra over-provisioning helps you combat write amplification by increasing the reserved space to SSDs. The lower the write amplification is, the better the SSD endurance performs for higher reliability and lifetime.

Add up to 60% over-provisioning

Besides vendor-defined over-provisioning (internal over-provisioning), QTS 4.3.5 provides greater flexibility to decide additional over-provisioning space to prevent significant performance degradation. You can set an over-provisioning ratio for SSD cache, Qtier pool, and static volume (between 1% and 60%) in addition to the vendor-defined value.

Note: Over-provisioning can only be configured when a storage space is created. It cannot be set for existing SSD caches or volumes.

Identify the optimum over-provisioning ratio with the SSD Profiling Tool

The SSD Profiling Tool is a unique QTS app that allows you to test SSD random write performance with extra over-provisioning ratio from 0 - 60%. Given the over-provisioning evaluation result, you can determine your target write performance (IOPS) to acquire the recommended over-provisioning ratio.

Accelerate critical tasks with a write-only cache

An SSD cache can greatly improve the performance of your NAS. With QTS 4.3.5 adding support for write-only SSD caches, you can now dedicate resources to greatly boost write-intensive applications, such as media storage and IoT (Internet of Things) log services to enjoy maximized ROI on SSDs.

Use RAID 5/6 SSD caches for higher performance and capacity

QTS 4.3.5 supports using RAID 5/6 for SSD caching. Although not ideal for random write performance boosts, RAID 5/6 configurations for sequential-access applications or a read-only cache can provide quality performance similar to a RAID 10 SSD cache along with more caching space that’s beneficial for boosting frequently-used data.

Directly restore from remotely-stored snapshots

From QTS 4.3.5, you can directly restore a local NAS from a remotely-stored snapshot replication without needing to manually copy the files back to the local NAS. This significantly streamlines restoration processes, saving a great deal of time for IT staff and decreasing the RTO (Recovery Time Objective) of your business.

Export snapshots to external devices

To provide an extra layer of protection (and/or to facilitate the physical migration of huge snapshots), you can export snapshot files from the NAS via the Storage & Snapshots Manager to an external storage device, and then quickly create a new volume, LUN or snapshot vault using that copy.

Flexible volume configuration and conversion

From QTS 4.3.5, you can convert volumes between thin and thick provisioning configurations, guaranteeing maximum flexibility and utilization of your disk space. Volume sizes can also be shrunk, ensuring your NAS can adapt to changing needs.

Boost VJBOD performance with iSER

QNAP's proprietary Virtual JBOD (VJBOD) technology now supports the iSCSI Extensions for RDMA (iSER) technology which can significantly accelerate transmissions between two QNAP NAS by bypassing operating system processes.

Notification Center: Stay informed at all times

The Notification Center app consolidates all of the QTS system logs, events, and alerts, providing you with a single-app solution for notifications instead of having to configure individual settings in multiple apps.
